CHASING TRANE:
The John Coltrane Documentary

This one was a recommendation and it didn't disappoint. The technical aspects of the film were top-notch, particularly the editing, sound mixing and the accompanying narrative. For someone who's been fascinated with John Coltrane's music but unable to grasp most of it, the documentary helped in explaining some of the musical choices Coltrane made when he went on his own, particularly from the Giant Steps album and thereafter.

The non-musical highlights was learning more of his family life and the tenderness he exhibited with them, even when he battled addiction early in his career. The weaker points of the film were insights from the celebrities who were not Coltrane's peers, except for Wynton Marsalis whose connection to the music cannot be questioned.

Recommendation: HIGHEST
